What is an Assistive Technology Assessment?
An Assistive Technology (AT) assessment is where a health professional helps a person to explore their needs, preference, and wishes to identify what AT solutions might be appropriate. For example, if a person is having trouble getting in and out of bed, they would help to asses:
- what exactly is making it difficult to get in and out of bed,
- what assistive technology could help them to get in and out of bed more easily or more independently, and
- what features and functions of these items are most relevant and appealing to the person and their support people.
From there, the professional might help to organise for hands-on trial of the most relevant items, to help the person compare each option and identify the most appropriate option for them. These might be low cost aids (like slippery sheets or bed raiser blocks) or higher cost items (like an adjustable bed or a hoist).
For AT that is difficult to get right, the professional might need to be heavily involved in trials and comparisons. After this, they will need to write a letter or report (a prescription) to recommend the item.
We take a comprehensive approach, considering a person's abilities, including how they move, how strong they are, how they process information and how they live. The goals is to provide advice and practical support fot the things that matter to them.
